Program Learning Outcomes

Goal 1: Equip students with linguistic knowledge of English as a world language 

Learning outcomes:

  • Distinguish different linguistic concepts and terms
  • Demonstrate common knowledge of linguistic universals
  • Analyze language at different language levels (phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic and discoursal) 
  • Communicate core academic knowledge through the different written, electronic/digital, and oral mediums
  • Compare languages (English and Arabic) within the same linguistic framework
  • Conduct language-based research that follows APA standards and format 

 

Goal 2: Equip students with skills in literary theory, analysis and interpretation

Learning outcomes:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of literature as a discipline with all its elements and terminology 
  • Demonstrate core academic knowledge of a range of literary texts in English from the medieval period to the present day
  • Identify and use key concepts and theories in literary criticism and theory to interpret literary texts
  • Employ higher level thinking skills in approaching literary and critical texts
  • Conduct literature-based research that follows MLA standards and format 


Goal 3: Equip students with 21st century communication skills

Learning outcomes:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of global theories in communication
  • Identify the role of communications in the field of public relations and within and across organizations of various kinds 
  • Produce and edit high quality oral, written, and  electronic/digital forms of communication 
  • Create content for communication purposes 
  • Employ research skills to strategically plan and execute communication campaigns 
  • Identify and utilize the correlation among culture, media and communications

 

Goal 4: Equip students with transferable skills and attributes

  • Demonstrate solid core knowledge in their academic field of study that prepares them for a career and/or to pursue graduate studies
  • Exhibit independent thinking and logic in the capacity to lead significant lives,  make sound choices and decisions, work effectively in teams, and respond creatively to a variety of challenges in their environment
  • Function in their role as citizens who understand local and global issues that concern humanity and who can affect positive change in the situations and environment in which they operate.
