Bethlehem University Undergraduate Catalog 2021-2022

Faculty of Science - Department of Computational Sciences and Engineering

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics

Program Description

The Department of Mathematics offers a Bachelor of Science degree with a Major in Mathematics. The principal aim of our program is to introduce several aspects of pure mathematics throughout the degree plus some aspects of applied mathematics.

The mathematics sequence in the mathematics major provides students with a strong foundation in mathematics and then gives students the flexibility to explore various aspects of the discipline, mainly in Algebra, analysis and statistics. The first year of the program is devoted to core courses that are needed by all mathematics and science graduates. Starting the second year, the proportion of the program that is core decreases, and the students will be exposed to a wider range of mathematics courses. A distinctive feature of the program is the final project (seminar) which provides the student with the opportunity to write a report and give presentations either within a team or individually.

There is also the flexibility within the mathematics major for a student to pursue a minor in a related field of study, namely Computer Information Systems, Physics, Chemistry or Biology. The way the program is built, can prepare students for jobs in teaching math and science, or industry, as well as, preparing students for graduate study in mathematics

The program is undertaken full time over a period of four years with either one or two summer sessions, with a 129 credits required for graduation, in which 49 are math courses, 29 are general science courses, 24 are required minor courses, and 34 are university required courses.
